A massive fire broke out at the Asansol Handicraft Fair on Wednesday afternoon, destroying multiple stalls and causing panic among traders and visitors. The fair, organized by the state government at the NCC ground near Asansol Stadium, had been running since March 1 and was scheduled to continue until March 12. The fire spread rapidly due to strong winds and the presence of highly flammable materials like wooden and cane handicrafts.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started at a food stall and quickly engulfed surrounding shops. Traders and workers initially attempted to control the blaze with buckets of water, but the fire intensified. Many shopkeepers alleged that fire safety measures were inadequate and that there were no immediate firefighting arrangements at the venue. Black smoke covered the entire area as the flames spread, leaving behind charred remains of the stalls.

Fire brigade teams reached the location after being informed, but traders claim the response was delayed by nearly an hour. “The fire brigade arrived about 40-45 minutes later. We couldn’t contact anyone immediately, so we had to start putting out the fire ourselves,” said a woman shopkeeper. Another businessman stated, “We suffered huge financial losses as the fire spread before help arrived.” However, there have been no reports of injuries or casualties.

Officials suspect that a short circuit may have triggered the fire, but an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of sabotage. Police and fire department officials are conducting site inspections and collecting statements from witnesses and stall owners. Traders affected by the fire are demanding compensation and better safety measures for future events.

The handicraft fair featured a wide range of handmade products from artisans across the region. With many stalls now reduced to ashes, traders are assessing their losses, while authorities face questions over the lack of fire preparedness. The administration has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
